Did you know that Flower Hospital (FH) was not named for a flower at all? Instead, FH as we know it today was named for Stevens Warren Flower, a Toledo businessman who sold seeds and fertilizer to area farmers. And in 1908, when Flower died, he bequeathed $20,000 to the Methodist Episcopal Church to be used, along with matching funds from the community, for building a new hospital.

The original hospital was dedicated in January 1910, and 100 years later, plans are well under way to help bring the celebration to those who have helped the hospital grow and thrive. With the birth of FH’s 100th baby of 2010, Abigail Sargent, in February, the hospital kicked off a series of events that will help engage and enlighten physicians, donors, patients, staff, and the community. Some of these events included the Stevens Warren Flower Society donor recognition event and an employee celebration in May. During the National Hospital and Health Care Week Benefits Fair at FH on May 12, a special centennial table full of history and activities gave employees another look at how FH has evolved to meet the needs of the patients we serve.

At the employee event on May 14, employees joined Alan Sattler, president, and other FH leadership and employees representing various years of service to FH and ProMedica for a rededication of the pillars on the cafeteria patio. The pillars were brought to Sylvania 35 years ago from the original building. The program included a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the pillars, and an overview of the centennial time capsule and contents that will be sealed and put on display in FH’s main lobby.
