Focus on Community Brings Major Announcement

September 2010  |  Posted in Uncategorized

Oostra_03
Sept. 1, 2010, marked an important date in the history of ProMedica—St. Luke’s Hospital officially became a member of the health system. After completing several months of rigorous due diligence following the signing of a definitive agreement to bring the two organizations together, the transaction is now complete!

Located in Maumee, St. Luke’s has 1,500 employees and 600 physicians who provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including high-risk cardiac surgery, oncology, labor and delivery, medical/surgical services, critical and emergency care. Each year, this nonprofit organization cares for more than 235,000 patients.

We are thrilled that St. Luke’s has become a member of the ProMedica family. We are all dedicated to achieving the same Mission: to improve the health of the individuals whom we serve. This new agreement also enables us to: provide convenient and easier access to programs and services, provide a comprehensive continuum of care, and evaluate ways to add value to existing services … just to name a few of our integration goals. For more information about this announcement, please see St. Luke’s Officially Becomes Member of ProMedica in this issue of Inside.

Also helping to underscore our value of being community-based, ProMedica is launching its annual United Way Campaign to help serve those in our region who are less fortunate, especially important during this time of economic uncertainty.

United Way spans the globe, with more than 1,000 local organizations in the U.S. But when you give, advocate or volunteer for the United Way, your contributions make a difference right here, close to home. I encourage your support when the United Way Campaign launches this fall.

United Way focuses on three key areas—education, income and health—to create opportunities for a better life for everyone. By uncovering and addressing the underlying causes of problems that stop advances in these areas, United Way hopes to create lasting change in our communities. United Way also provides essential services to meet the most critical, basic needs and outreach to connect volunteers with opportunities in our communities, as evidenced by their role in coordinating assistance in the aftermath of the tornadoes that devastated portions of our region earlier this year.

Because of my personal experience, United Way is very special to me. Coming from ProMedica with our Mission to serve others, it’s easy for me to embrace the similar mission of United Way. For several years, I volunteered on the United Way of Greater Toledo Board of Trustees, during which I witnessed firsthand the positive impact that contributions like yours and mine can make. Our chief human resources officer, Arturo Polizzi, now serves on the board representing ProMedica. And, throughout Greater Toledo and the outlying areas, there are many other ProMedica leadership team members and employees who volunteer their time to benefit the United Way.

This fall, all of us will have an opportunity to give to United Way during our annual campaign. I encourage others to join me and become part of the change we want to see in our communities. Please see Rise to the Challenge: 2010 United Way Campaign in this issue of Inside for the campaign dates in your area. Then watch for more information about how to participate in this year’s campaign.

Feel free to send questions about topics you’d like to see me address in future issues to inside@promedica.org.

St. Luke’s Officially Becomes Member of ProMedica

September 2010  |  Posted in Excellence

StLukes
In May of this year, ProMedica Health System and St. Luke’s Hospital signed a definitive agreement with the intent of St. Luke’s becoming a member of the health system.  Having completed the necessary due diligence, St. Luke’s officially became a member of ProMedica Health System on Sept. 1, 2010.

Both ProMedica and St. Luke’s are dedicated to achieving the same overarching Mission:  to improve the health of the people we serve through collaboration, community and caring.

The most visible initial change the community and employees will notice is that St. Luke’s will now be included in the Paramount Health Care network. As a result, Paramount members and ProMedica employees will have access to St. Luke’s services. In addition, St. Luke’s employees will have access to ProMedica services and facilities through Medical Mutual’s Ohio SuperMed Plus network.

The due diligence over the last several months has been intense, rigorous and detailed. Yet, in many ways the work starts now as our internal teams begin to meet in earnest, seeking ways to:  enhance access to superior health care, increase efficiencies, determine ways to coordinate care more effectively, and reduce costs.

One of the first areas of focus is service line and clinical integration. Teams have been formed to begin the process of analyzing which services should be integrated to achieve efficiencies.

Nationwide, resources are shrinking while the need for top-quality health care has never been higher. The enhanced level of cooperation and collaboration between St. Luke’s and ProMedica is proactive and provides a strong, more efficient model that will enable us to stay ahead of the healthcare reform curve while meeting the needs of our community.

Over the next several weeks, leadership from St. Luke’s Hospital will be touring metro-Toledo ProMedica facilities. If you have an opportunity to talk with any member of St. Luke’s, please help us to welcome them to the ProMedica family.

New Program Assists Employees in Financial Need

September 2010  |  Posted in Benefits

What if you encountered an unforeseen financial emergency—an illness or injury, natural disaster or other event—that left you in dire need of assistance? Imagine the devastating effect this could have on your well-being, especially if you were unsure of where to turn for help. Or, maybe you’ve experienced such an event and know how overwhelming this can feel.

Thanks to contributions designated during the ProMedica Foundations’ Circle of Care annual employee giving campaign this summer, the Employee Financial Assistance Program is now in place to help ProMedica employees who demonstrate great financial need due to circumstances beyond their control.

Employees may apply for a grant of up to $1,500 per year with no obligation to repay. Grants are processed through the foundations and are not considered compensation. To be eligible, employees must meet the following criteria:

   • Completed at least one year of service.

   • Be an employee in good standing and not in significant disciplinary review.

   • Exhausted other sources of temporary financial assistance, including cashing out earned time
off and/or utilizing any hospital or business-unit assistance program.

Please contact your human resources department for more information or to fill out a confidential application to be considered for financial assistance. You can also let human resources know of coworkers who may be in need, so they can confidentially invite those coworkers to apply.

A five-member, multidisciplinary selection committee, made up of ProMedica employees, confidentially reviews applications. Human resources then informs applicants of the status of their requests.

FOG

ProMedica will launch its 3rd annual Fields of Green scholarship program for high school students this month. As a leader in health care, ProMedica established Fields of Green as a system-wide initiative to raise awareness about obesity. The program encourages healthy lifestyles, while promoting solid nutrition and exercise habits.

The 2011 Fields of Green scholarship contest will ask high school students to form small teams and design a breakfast program for elementary school students, including five in-school meals and five at-home meals. Students in grades 10 – 12 may enter the contest.

The competition is open to students in ProMedica’s service area in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Each member of the winning team will receive a $5,000 college scholarship, and the winning team’s school will receive a $1,000 cash award for the school’s health and science curriculum.

Contest entries must be received by Wed., Dec. 1, 2010. Watch for more information about the Fields of Green scholarship contest, including how to submit entries, at www.promedica.org/fieldsofgreen.
